Overview
Ultrasound
Ultrasound of the abdomen can be performed in patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia to assess for spleen size and to assess mesenteric thrombosis. These indications are similar to the indications for CT scan, although ultrasound is the preferred initial imaging modality given that ultrasound is less expensive. Ultrasound can also be used to assess for deep vein thrombosis, which can occur in patients with active hemolysis, since active hemolysis is a risk factor for thrombosis.
