Overview
Other diagnostic studies for chronic myelogenous leukemia include bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, and lymph node biopsy.
The diagnostic work-up for chronic myelogenous leukemia consists of a complete blood count, including a differential and a platelet count; marrow aspiration, with measurement of the percentage of blasts and the percentage of basophils; marrow biopsy; and cytogenetic studies for Ph and markers of karyotypic evolution. In patients who are Ph negative, molecular studies, such as Southern blot assay or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are indicated to detect the BCR-ABL rearrangements.PMID:10428738

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. After a small area of skin is numbed, a Jamshidi needle (a long, hollow needle) is inserted into the patient’s hip bone. Samples of blood, bone, and bone marrow are removed for examination under a microscope.[2]
