- Radiation exposure: Radiation treatment for the head and neck cancer increases the risk of developing salivary gland cancer. Workplace exposure to certain radioactive substances may also increase the risk of salivary gland cancer. [1]
- Therapeutic radiation of the head and neck region
- Positive family history: familial predisposition
- Strong association between Epstein Barr Virus and lymphoepithelial carcinomas
- Endogenous hormones: Estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and androgen receptors
- Iodine treatment of thyroid disease
- Occupational hazards:
- Asbestos and rubber manufacturing
- Exposure to metal in the plumbing industry
- Exposure to nickel compounds
- Woodworking in the automobile industry
- Employment in hairdressing and beauty shops
