Overview

Bacterial tracheitis is most often caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. It frequently follows a recent viral upper respiratory infection.

Causes

Life-threatening Causes

• Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated. There are no life-threatening causes of tracheitis, however complications resulting from untreated tracheitis can occur. Acute airway obstruction can occur due to rapidly developing exudates and thick membranes in the trachea.It needs emergency intubation to prevent life threatening consequences.

Common Causes

Common causes of tracheitis may include:

• Staphylococcus Aureus
• Heamophilus Influenza
• alpha hemolytic streptococci
• Streptococcus Pyogenes
• Moraxella Catarrhalis
• Mycoplasma Pneumonia
• Parainfluenza 1 and 2
• Influenza A and B
• RSV
• Adenovirus
• Rhinovirus
• Coxsackievirus
• Paramyxovirus

Less Common Causes

Less common causes of tracheitis include:

• Pseudomonas Aureginosa
• Acinetobacter baumannii,
• Klebsiella Pneumonia
• Escherichia coli
• Enterobacter cloacae
• Apergillus
• Histoplasma
• Cryptococcus Neoformans

Genetic Causes

• There are no known genetic causes for tracheitis.
