Overview

The general incidence of unilateral renal agenesis (URA) has been reported to be approximately 1 in 2031 individuals. The incidence of bilateral renal agenesis (BRA) is approximately 1 in every 3000 pregnancies. Males are more commonly affected by unilateral renal agenesis (URA) than females. The mortality rate of bilateral renal agenesis (BRA) without prenatal therapy is 100%.

Epidemiology and Demographics

Incidence

• The general incidence of unilateral renal agenesis (URA) has been reported to be approximately 1 in 2031 individuals, however, the incidence of URA based on prenatal studies alone has been reported to be 1 in 8091. (westland)
• The incidence of bilateral renal agenesis (BRA) is approximately 1 in every 3000 pregnancies. (1 va 2 inhuber)

Prevalence

A report showed that the prevalence of unilateral renal agenesis (URA) was 3.3 per 10,000 in live births but the overall prevalence of URA was 4 per 10,000 in all births which included terminations of pregnancy (TOP) and intrauterine deaths (IUD). (laurich)

Mortality rate

The mortality rate of bilateral renal agenesis (BRA) without prenatal therapy is 100%. (huber)

Gender

Males are more commonly affected by unilateral renal agenesis (URA) than females. It has been reported that 63% of the patients with URA are male. (westland)
