Overview

Anemia of prematurity may be caused by a combination of blood loss, decreased red blood cells production, and shortened lifespan of red blood cells.

Causes

Common causes of anemia of prematurity include

• Premature birth
• Phlebotomy for laboratory testing in preterm infants
• Shortened lifespan of RBC

Less common causes of anemia of prematurity include

• Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, and Folate deficiencies
