Overview
Patients with pyonephrosis can present with a history of Sudden onset of symptoms including fever and chills, recent urinary tract infection, previous history of pyelonephritis or nephrolithiasis. The patients can be asymptomatic or present with symptoms like fever with chills, flank pain, back pain, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting among others.
History
Patients with pyonephrosis can present with a history of[1]:
- Sudden onset of symptoms including fever and chills
- Recent urinary tract infection
- History of pyelonephritis
- Nephrolithiasis
- Immunosuppression
- Diabetes mellitus, HIV AIDS
- Congenital structural defect of the urinary tract
- Tumor
Symptoms
Patients with pyonephrosis can be asymptomatic or present with the following symptoms[2]:
- Fever
- Chills
- Flank pain, back pain, abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue
- Frequent urination
- Burning sensation when urinating
- Foul smelling urine
- Blood or pus in urine
These symptoms should raise the suspicion of pyonephrosis which demands emergent care.
