Overview
Approximately 1 in every three normal adults have a patent foramen ovale.
Epidemiology and Demographics
The incidence of Patent foramen ovale has been found to be approximately 30% in different studies.
Age
- Incidence varied with age, with PFO occuring with higher incidence in patients up to 30 years of age (34.3%) while incidence decresed between patients with 40 to 80 years of age (25.4%) and it was least found in patients in their 90s (20.2%). The size increases with increasing age, from a mean of approximately 3mm in the first decade to approximately 6 mm in the 10th decade of life.
- The size of foramen ovale might range from 1 to 19 mm whereas, in most cases it varies from 1 to 10 mm in diameter. The size tended to increase with increasing age, from a mean of 3.4 mm in the first decade to 5.8 mm in the 10th decade of life.
Sex
- No significant difference in size and incidence based on sex was seen.
