Magic mouthwash
Magic mouthwash refers to any of a number of analgesic formulations prescribed, most commonly, for patients receiving radiation therapy or chemotherapy, which can cause painful oral ulcers. These formulations are typically compounded in the pharmacy from a number of ingredients specified in the prescription.
Common ingredients include:
- Diphenhydramine - an antihistamine
- Lidocaine - a local anesthetic
- Maalox - an antacid formulation which acts as a coating agent
