Direct and indirect evidence of persistent viral infection long after recovery from acute illness has been found in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. This is possibly due to the activation of microglia during the acute infection phase in such individuals. EEG may help to evaluate such patients with presumable CNS involvement.
