Overview
Surgical options are very limited in cases of encephalopathy. However, there are a few studies which have tried some surgical techniques to improve the outcome of hepatic encephalopathy.[1]
Surgery
- Surgical options for the treatment of encephalopathy are limited.
- Shunt reduction with an hourglass-shaped polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) balloon graft seems effective in reducing shunt flow and rapidly improving the patient's clinical condition.[1]
- This technique has a poor outcome on follow up.
