Overview

Underlying structural heart disease is generally absent. Often, there is no precipitant of an episode. Risk factors for precipitation of AVNRT include:

• Alcohol
• Anxiety
• Caffeine
• Chocolate
• Hyperthyroidism
• Hypokalemia
• Hypomagnesemia
• Myocardial ischemia
• Menstruation
• Psychological stress
• Stimulants
• Tea
• Theobromine in foods like tea, coffee and chocolate
• Theophylline
