Historical Perspective

The common name, Wilms' tumor, is an eponym, referring to Dr. Max Wilms, the German surgeon (1867-1918) and pathologist who first described this kind of tumor. Some of his other contributions to the field of surgery are a partial rib resection for pulmonary tuberculosis as well as a method of performing perineal prostatectomy via a lateral incision. He also did work on the use of radiation therapy and developed an instrument to measure cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
