Ever since the eradication of the smallpox virus, many antiviral drugs have been studies against orthodox viruses in general, including:

• Cidofovir

• Inhibitor of the viral DNA polymerase
• Treatment of other DNA viruses
• Investigational drug for the treatment of potential adverse effect following smallpox vaccination
• Available in the IV form, with severe nephrotoxicity
• New formulations are being studied
