Cholestatin is the trademarked name of a nutritional supplement containing phytosterols, intended to reduce cholesterol.
Safety concerns
Cholestatin should be administered carefully in patients with diabetes or organ transplants [1]. As a consequence, blood donors should avoid it three days prior to the donation, since their blood may be administered to such patients and it may have effects on their hormonal profile. Serologists should know if Cholestatin is being used in the treatment of blood donors who are in remission for abnormal cholesterol levels, so that they may know what to look for in irregularities.
