Hudson River Psychiatric Center

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Template:Infobox nrhp The Hudson River State Hospital, later known as the Hudson River Psychiatric Center is a former psychiatric hospital that has been designated a National Historic Landmark for its extraordinary architecture. It is located on US 9 just north of Poughkeepsie, where it dominates the view to the east of the road.

The facility is linked to Frederick Clark Withers, a partner with Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted (famous for their design of Central Park), who created a Gothic Revival plan for a mental health institution.

The main building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.[1],[2],[3]

The building was closed down in 2003 and since then has fallen into a state of disrepair. It was seriously damaged in a 2007 fire. It is not open to the public and the Town of Poughkeepsie police regularly patrol the site to discourage trespassing.
