Overview
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful in the presence of atypical symptoms or in the setting of a normal ultrasound in a highly suspected patient.
MRI
- Magnetic resonance venography with 100% sensitivity and 97% specificity is one of the most accurate non-invasive diagnostic tools for Paget-Schroetter disease.[1]
- MR venography is capable of detecting thrombus in the venous system.[2]
- MR venography has some disadvantages which may limit its usage. Such as :
- Limited availability[3]
- High price
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is helpful to confirm or exclude the diagnosis when Paget-Schroetter disease is highly suspected, but there are no abnormal ultrasound findings. This imaging method could also be used to study other possible etiologies of Subclavian-Axillary vein compression.[4]
- MR angiography is an accurate diagnostic tool capable of :
- Detecting Axillary-Subclavian vein occlusion
- Point stenosis of Axillary-Subclavian vein at level of the first rib[5]
- Determining the presence of dilated collateral veins (could be helpful to determine thrombus chronicity)[6]
- Positional Subclavian vein obstruction (performed at rest with elevated upper limb)[7]
