Overview

Although at the present moment there are no antiviral treatments for poliovirus, vaccination has shown to be an effective approach towards the eradication of the virus. Future studies are required in order to evaluate the best approach for immunization of the remaining endemic areas. Following the eradication of serotype 2, replacement of trivalent OPV for bivalent OPV has been discussed, thereby eliminating the risk of reinsurance of vaccine virus serotype 2.
