Overview
Other diagnostic tests that can be used for diagnosis of complications include a barium swallow for stricture diagnosis, biopsies of the kidneys and the endometrium for further evaluation of the degree of involvement, paracentesis to evaluate effusions, and arthrocentesis to differentiate different causes of arthritis.
Other Diagnostic Studies
Bronchoscopy
Fiberoptic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial lung biopsies:[1][2]
- To substantiate the diagnosis of alveolar hemorrhage
Barium swallow or esophagography
- Esophageal stricture[3]
- Peptic strictures that appear as smooth, tapered narrowing in the distal esophagus
- Esophageal dilatation[3]
Biopsy
- Renal biopsies:[4][5]
- Determining the degree of renal involvement
- Delineating treatment decisions and prognosis in certain clinical scenarios
- Assess activity and damage (i.e., chronicity)
- Helping with classification
- Endomyocardial biopsy:[6]
- May be helpful in guiding treatment towards the use of corticosteroids
Paracentesis
- Paracentesis in the presence of the following conditions either for symptomatic relief (therapeutic) or fluid evaluation (diagnostic):
- Ascites[7]
- Massive pleural effusion[8]
- Massive pericardial effusion and tamponade[9]
Arthrocentesis
