Ventricular septum anatomy [1]


The ventricular septum can be divided into four components-

  • Membranous
  • Inlet septum
  • Trabecular septum
  • Outlet or Infundibular septum


The disease occurs either due to defective growth or failure to alignment of one of these components. Types of defects seen are-


  • Membranous septum (Perimembranous, paramembranous)are most commonly seen.
  • Muscular septum defect
  • Outlet septum defect(supracristal/subpulmonary/outlet)
  • Malalignment of one of these septums.
