Overview
Patients with folate deficiency may appear normal in some cases but usually if anemia is moderate or severe, the patient would appear pale, malnourished or underdeveloped. All organ systems can be involved by the effects of anemia.
Physical Examination
Appearance of the patient
- Patients with folate deficiency anemia may appear pale, malnourished or underdeveloped.
Vital signs
HEENT
- Pallor
- Jaundice[1]
- Angular stomatitis
- Cheilosis
- Glossitis
Skin
- Pale skin color (pallor)
- Hyperpigmentation
Lungs
- Tachypnea
- Dyspnea
Heart
- Tachycardia
- Systolic flow murmur
Neuromuscular
- Slowly progressive sensory neuropathy, predominantly deep sensory loss, with preservation of bicep tendon reflexes[2]
