Overview
Kidney transplantation is increasing in HIV-positive patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).[1] Although the rejection rate is high, the graft survival rates are high.[2][3] Recently reports have shown successful kidney transplantation from HIV-positive donors to HIV-positive recipients.[4][5]

- Kidney transplantation in HIV-positive patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing.[1]
- A study reported a two to threefold increase in kidney rejection in patients with HIV-positive compared to HIV-negative.[2].
- In one study the incidence of rejection was 31% and 41% at 1 and 3 years, respectively.[2] In another study the acute rejection rate was 18% and 27% at 1 and 3 years, respectively.[3]
- The high rejection rate require more effective immunotherapy.[2]
