Acute right upper quadrant abdominal pain usually arises from the liver and the biliary tree. Gallstone diseases are among the most common causes of right upper quadrant abdominal pain; hence, an emphasis is first laid on the gallstone diseases while approaching the patient.

Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
