Primary Prevention
Secondary polycythemia can be prevented by avoiding things that cause oxygen deprivation for long periods like mountain climbing, living at a high altitude, and smoking. Patients with serious cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases may develop secondary polycythemia. While treatment for the underlying disease may improve the secondary polycythemia, it can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle.
