Overview
Pneumoconiosis may be classified according to subtypes based on the particle of exposure. These can be fibrogenic, granulomatous, benign or hard metal: [1] [2]
- Fibrogenic: silica, coal, asbestos, talc
- Granulomatous: beryllium
- Benign: Iron, tin, barium
- Hard metal: cobalt
Classification
- Fibrogenic:
- Silicosis - silica
- Coalworker's pneumoconiosis
- Asbestosis - asbestos fibers
- Talcosis - talc
- Granulomatous:
- Berylliosis - beryllium dust
- Benign:
- Siderosis - iron
- Hard metal pneumoconiosis
Pneumoconiosis in combination with multiple pulmonary rheumatoid nodules in rheumatoid arthritis patients is known as Caplan's syndrome.[3] [4] [5]
