Overview

Head CT scan may be helpful in the diagnosis of brainstem gliomas. CT scan findings of brainstem gliomas vary according to the different subtypes.

CT

Head CT scan may be helpful in the diagnosis of brainstem gliomas. The findings will vary with the tumor type.[1]

  • Diffuse brainstem glioma
    • Typically hypodense with little, if any, enhancement
  • Focal brainstem gliomas
    • Isointense on CT
  • Tectal gliomas
    • Typical CT finding is homogeneous expansion of tectal plate, isodense to grey matter with minimal enhancement on postcontrast images. It is also common to find a central tectal calcification
