Overview
Orthopnea is often observed among patients with left heart failure. Orthopnea can also occur in patients suffering from asthma and chronic bronchitis, as well as those with sleep apnea or panic disorder.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
- Acute cardiac allograft rejection
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome
- Anaphylaxis
- Bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis
- Carbon monoxide toxicity
- Pneumothorax
- Pulmonary embolism
- Myocardial infarction
