Overview

A CT scan will usually show an inhomogeneous mass with a hypodense center and a variable ring of enhancement surrounded by edema. Mass effect from the tumor and edema may compress the ventricles and cause hydrocephalus

Head CT scan is helpful in the diagnosis of glioblastoma. On head CT scan, glioblastoma is characterized by:[1]

  • Intense irregular, heterogenous enhancement of the margins
  • Irregular hypodense centre representing necrosis
  • Marked mass effect (midline shift)
  • Butterfly shaped mass crossing midline via the corpus callosum
  • Surrounding vasogenic edema
  • Hemorrhage
  • Calcification is rare
