CT scan may be helpful in the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer.

CT scan may be helpful in the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer. Findings on CT scan suggestive of papillary thyroid cancer include:
- CT is best at staging lymph node involvement (see thyroid cancer staging). Involved lymph nodes tend to have any of the following features:
- Cystic components: ~35%
- Thick nodular walls: ~40%
- Septa: ~60%
- Purely cystic nodes are uncommon and more frequent in young patients
- Calcification may be seen occasionally
