Overview
Common risk factors in the development of cervicitis include high-risk sexual behavior, history of sexually transmitted diseases, multiple sex partners, and bacterial vaginosis.
Risk Factors
Cervicitis is very common, affecting more than half of all women at some point during their adult life. Risks include:
- High-risk sexual behavior
- History of STDs
- Multiple sexual partners
- Sex (intercourse) at an early age
- Sexual partners who have engaged in high-risk sexual behavior or have had an STD
- Bacteria (such as staphylococcus and streptococcus) and too much growth of normal bacteria in the vagina (bacterial vaginosis) can also cause cervicitis.
- Single marital status
- Urban residence
- Low socioeconomic status
- Alcohol or drug use
