Overview
According to the International Prostatitis Collaboration Network, prostatitis may be classified into 5 subtypes based on the duration of symptoms and evidence of bacterial infection/inflammation into either acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, inflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, non-inflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, or asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis.[1]
Classification
According to the International Prostatitis Collaboration Network, prostatitis may be classified based on the duration of symptoms and evidence of bacterial infection as shown below:[1]
- Acute bacterial prostatitis: Acute symptoms with evidence of bacterial infection
- Chronic bacterial prostatitis: Chronic symptoms with evidence of bacterial infection
- Inflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome: Chronic symptoms with inflammation but without any evidence of bacterial infection
- IgG4 related prostatitis: It i the inflammation of the prostate in a person with IgG4 related disease.[5]
- Non-inflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome: Chronic symptoms with neither inflammation nor evidence of bacterial infection
- Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis: No symptoms with evidence of inflammation (incidental finding)
