Overview
There are no established causes for systemic lupus erythematosus. Common causes of systemic lupus erythematosus include genetic predisposition, auto-immune disease, and drugs. Less common causes of systemic lupus erythematosus include environmental factors, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light.
Causes
- Genetic predisposition[1]
- HLA class polymorphism
- Complement genes
- Female sexual gene due to high levels of estrogen and prolactin
- Auto-immune disease[2]
- Environmental triggers[3]
- Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light
- Can exacerbate or induce systemic manifestations of SLE
- Drug-induced lupus
- Acebutolol
