Overview

Skin biopsy can be of value in establishing the diagnosis. The characteristic findings on renal biopsy may include intraluminal thrombi, diffuse IgM deposition in the capillary loops and subendothelial deposits in a “curvilinear” pattern on EM.

Other Diagnostic Studies

Skin Biopsy

Skin biopsy can be of value in establishing the diagnosis.

Renal Biopsy

  • The characteristic findings on renal biopsy are:[1][2]
    1. Intraluminal thrombi
    2. Diffuse IgM deposition in the capillary loops
    3. Subendothelial deposits in a “curvilinear” pattern on EM.
  • Only 14% develop end stage renal disease (ESRD) at 10 years after a renal biopsy demonstrates MC.
  • Recurrent MC can affect up to 70% of transplanted kidneys, but does not preclude transplantation since most of these grafts do not fail.
