Overview
The feasibility of surgery depends on the stage of hypopharyngeal cancer at the time of diagnosis. The primary goal of the surgery is to clear any margin that contains tumor cells. The available surgery options include transoral laser surgery, total laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy surgery, total laryngectomy and circumferential pharyngectomy.
Indications
The feasibility of surgery depends on the stage of hypopharyngeal cancer at the time of diagnosis. Surgical resection is a better option in stage I and II[1]
Surgery
Surgical options for treatment of hypopharangeal cancer include:[2]
- Transoral laser surgery.
- Total laryngectomy with pharyngectomy surgery.
- Total laryngectomy and circumferential pharyngectomy.
