Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a bacterial infection caused by a wide variety of microbes. It is caused usually by a single organism but it can be polymicrobial too. The most common organisms are aerobic gram negative bacteria(E.coli)<ref>http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22449290</ref>.
