Overview

Causes can be divided into the following groups:

• Decreased production in the bone marrow:
  • Hereditary disorders (e.g. congenital neutropenia, Cyclic neutropenia)
  • Cancer
  • Drugs(e.g. Albendazole, Amlodipine and Benazepril, Capecitabine, caspofungin acetate, Chlorpromazine, Cyclophosphamide, Docetaxel, doxycycline, Febuxostat, Haloperidol, Imatinib, Interferon beta- 1a, Interferon beta- 1b, Lenalidomide, Meropenem, Metoclopramide, Methimazole, Mycophenolate, Minocycline hydrochloride, Olanzapine, Paclitaxel, Prochlorperazine, Ribavirin, Rifaximin, Sulfasalazine, Sulindac, Thalidomide, Valganciclovir hydrochloride, Zidovudine)
  • Radiation
  • Vitamin B₁₂ or folate deficiency.
• Increased destruction:
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Autoimmune neutropenia.
  • Chemotherapy
• Marginalisation and sequestration:
  • Hemodialysis
