Overview
Filariasis is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that inhabit the lymphatics and subcutaneous tissues. Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi are the main cause of filariasis.
Causes
Eight main species infect humans.
- Brugia malayi
- Brugia timori
- Loa loa filaria
- Mansonella ozzardi
- Mansonella perstans
- Mansonella streptocerca
- Onchocerca volvulus
- Wuchereria bancrofti
