Overview
Medical Therapy
There is no medical treatment for infants diagnosed with congenital rubella syndrome, neither for pregnant women infected with rubella. Most complications arising as a result are managed surgically. However, prenatal management of mothers infected with rubella depends on the gestational age at the onset of infection:[1]
- Before 18 weeks of gestation: termination of the pregnancy should be discussed, as chances of fetal complications are high
- After 18 weeks of gestation: pregnancy can be continued and closely monitored through serial ultrasound
