Overview
Symptoms of uveal melanoma include eye pain, eye redness, loss of peripheral vision, poor or blurry vision in one eye, a dark spot on the iris, flashing lights, floaters, and symptoms of glaucoma.[1]
History
The history for uveal melanoma should include assessment for risk factors such as cutaneous or iris nevi, UV light exposure, host pigmentation factors, family history of inherited skin disorders, onset and extent of visual abnormalities, and extraocular manifestations.
Symptoms
Clinical presentation depends on the location. When the tumor is located on the iris then it may be apparent to the patient or friends and family as a brown nodule. Choroidal or ciliary body tumors are only identified incidentally on fundoscopy or as a result of retinal detachment or advanced disease.[2] The majority of patients with uveal melanoma are symptomatic at the time of diagnosis, but up to 30% patients could be asymptomatic. Many cases of uveal melanoma are found during routine eye examination. Common symptoms of uveal melanoma include:[1]
- Eye pain
- Eye redness
- Loss of peripheral vision
- Poor or blurry vision in one eye
- A dark spot on the iris
- Seeing flashing lights
- Floaters
- Symptoms of glaucoma
- Severe headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Halos around lights
