Overview

Volvulus must be distinguished from other diseases, as it may be a solitary finding or a feature of another disease. Differential diagnoses include:Crohn's disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, duodenal atresia, pyloric stenosis, toxic megacolon and pseudocolonic obstruction (Ogilvie syndrome).

Differentiating Volvulus from other Diseases

The following are differential diagnoses for volvulus:

• Crohn's disease
• Necrotizing enterocolitis
• Duodenal atresia
• Pyloric stenosis
• Gastroenteritis
• Superior mesenteric artery syndrome
• Gastroesophageal reflux
• Ulcerative colitis
• Toxic megacolon
• Pseudocolonic obstruction (Ogilvie syndrome)
