Causes
- The causes of umbilical hernia are as follows:
- Congenital umbilical hernia
- Congenital malformation of the navel (umbilicus).
- Acquired umbilical hernia
- Due to increased intra-abdominal pressure caused by obesity, lifting, coughing, or multiple pregnancies
- Paraumbilical hernia
- Adults
- Defect in the midline near the umbilicus, and from omphalocele.
- Congenital umbilical hernia
It is theorized that cutting the umbilical at birth is a cause of umbilical hernia. Allowing the umbilical cord to fall off naturally may eliminate chance of umbilical hernia in infants.
Also, abnormal decussation of fibers at the linea alba may contribute to the development of an umbilical hernia.
