Risk Factors

The risk factors for umbilical hernia are as follows:

• Infants
• African Americans
• Patients with the following pre-existing diseases:
  • Mucopolysaccharide storage diseases
  • Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome
  • Down syndrome
• Pregnant woman. They are suseptible to hernias. There are times that the uterus may block the bowels from coming through the opening, but these cases are rather rare. Six weeks after the baby is born, most surgeons will repair the hernia.
