The patient with suspected sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) requires the following lab studies: complete blood count, liver function tests, complete metabolic profile and viral hepatitis serologies.
Laboratory Findings
The diagnosis of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome should be considered in any patient who has undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplant and develops liver dysfunction.
- The following tests can be performed in patients with suspected sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS):[1][2][3]
- Complete blood count
- Prothrombin time/International Normalized Ratio (INR)
- Metabolic profile (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, glucose, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, lactate dehydrogenase)
- Liver function tests (aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alanine aminotransferase [ALT], alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase [GGT], total and direct bilirubin, albumin)
- Viral hepatitis serologies (hepatitis B surface antigen, anti-hepatitis B core IgM, hepatitis B virus DNA, anti-hepatitis C virus antibodies, hepatitis C virus RNA, anti-herpes simplex virus antibodies, CMV-specific IgM antibodies)
- Amylase and lipase
