Overview
Epidemiology and Demographics
Incidence
- The incidence of mixed connective tissue disease is approximately 2.7 per 100,000 individuals per year.[1]
Prevalence
- Population-based epidemiology study in Norway estimated the point prevalence of adult-onset MCTD to be 3.8 per 100,000 individuals.[2]
- A nationwide study in Japan showed the prevalence of mixed connective tissue disease was 2.7 per 100,000.[3]
Mortality rate
- In MCTD, the mortality rate is nearly 10.4% over the period of 13-15 years.[4]
Age
- Mixed connective tissue disease is usually diagnosed during childhood. It usually starts between 2 and 16 years of age (mean age of 11 years old).[1]
Race
- MCTD is more frequent in the black population and among Asians.[5]
Gender
- Female are more commonly affected by mixed connective tissue disease than male. The female to male ratio is approximately 10 to 1.[6]
