Overview
Medical treatment of analgesic nephropathy may include: discontinuation of analgesics, adequate hydration with normal saline and treatment of infections with antibiotics.
Medical Therapy
Treatment of analgesic nephropathy begins with the discontinuation of analgesics, which often halts the progression of the disease and may even result in normalization of kidney function.[1]
After this depending on the damage to kidneys done, kidney transplant or kidney dialysis may be required. An appropriate diet and lifestyle changes may be required.
Medical treatment of analgesic nephropathy may include:[2][3]
- Discontinuation of analgesics:
- Prevents further damage and renal function may recover to normal level
- Adequate hydration with normal saline:
- Correction of volume depletion
- Treatment of infections with antibiotics:
- Prevents further deterioration
- Correction of electrolyte disturbances and systemic acidosis
- Control of severe hypertension
