Overview
The exact pathophysiology of arachnoid cysts is not known.
Pathophysiology
- The mechanism through which arachnoid cysts develop are not yet known.
- Different pathophysiologic mechanisms are thought to occur due to the fact that there are different known causes to it such as developmental, during pregnancy (primary cysts), trauma, surgery and CNS infections.
- There have been cases of arachnoid cysts appearing in multiple members of a family (familial cases) which suggests that there might be a genetic component playing a role in the development of arachnoid cysts in some patients.[1]
