Overview
In developed countries the two most common causes of atrial fibrillation are hypertensive heart disease and coronary heart disease. In developing countries rheumatic heart disease is associated with a much higher incidence of atrial fibrillation.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
- Congestive heart failure
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte disturbance
- Hypothermia
- Hypoxia
- Myocardial infarction[1]
- Myocarditis
- Pericarditis
- Pheochromocytoma
- Pulmonary embolism[2]
