Epidemiology and Demographics
In 1990, a multicenter study of intensive care unit patients at eight French hospitals has documented the association of septic thrombophlebitis with the use of catheter, in which there were a positive cultures for 24% of central catheters, and 9% of peripheral catheters.[1]
Extremes of age also predispose the occurrence of septic thrombophlebitis, due to the increased risk of infections by catheters in multiple health issues.
