Risk factors
- Doctors and researchers don’t know what causes most childhood tumors, including brain stem glioma. There is some evidence that genetic factors may play a role in a small percentage of brain stem gliomas.
- Children irradiated fortinea capitis have been found to have an increased risk for other central nervous system tumors, such as meningiomas, gliomas, and nerve sheath tumors, but not necessarily tumors of the brain stem.
- The following genetic conditions are associated with a higher risk of developing a CNS tumor:
- Li-Fraumeni syndrome
- Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)
- Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome
- Tuberous sclerosis
- Turcot syndrome[1]
