Overview
Common risk factors in the development of fibromyalgia include stressful or traumatic events, such as car accidents, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and injuries from repetitive stress on a joint, including frequent knee bending, illness (such as viral infections), or obesity. Family history is also a common risk factor.[1]

The possible risk factors for fibromyalgia include: [1]
- Women are twice as likely to have fibromyalgia as men
- Stressful or traumatic events, such as car accidents, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Repetitive injuries and injury from repetitive stress on a joint, such as frequent knee bending
- Illness (such as viral infections)
- Family history
- Obesity
- Monozygotic twins have a greater risk than dizygotic twins.
